The Maisons Tropicales are three prefabricated housing structures designed by Jean Prouvé. Fabricated in France, they were transported to and assembled Brazzaville Niamey, then part of the French colonies, around 1950. Their design was tied closely belief so-called civilizing enlightening power European modernist and, thereby, also colonial agenda. In early 2000s, an American collector, Robert Rubin, a art dealer, Eric Touchaleaume, “repatriated” houses France. There, transformed into celebrated as icons modern design, while their histories ignored. This article analyzes importance discourse this transformation how it reflects ongoing dynamics dispossession world.
